SILENCE IS GOLDEN

Posted by Billy Roberts on November 30, 2008 11:39 AM |

But is Silence really Golden?  To some people silence is a threat and  is simply a doorway to loneliness, and to others it is perhaps a route of escape when life has become too stressful.  Some people have no silence at all; these individuals destroy everyone else's silence by creating chaos and talking incessantly.  To some people silence is a 'supernatural burden' that is capable of bringing dread to the mightiest of souls.  In crowds they seek isolation and to drive away the invisible enemy of silence.  Plato once said: 'The fool speaks because he wants to talk; the wise man speaks because he has something to say.'  The Swiss precept says it all: 'SPRECHEN IST SILBERN, SCHWEIGEN IST GOLDERN'.  Speech is silver, Silence is golden. But, is it really?  Maurice Maeterlink, twentieth century playright and mystic once said, 'Speech is of Time, Silence is of Eternity.'  Now, that's more like it!
